Chicago’s Washington Square Park, commonly referred to as Bughouse Square, is one of the oldest parks in Chicago, dating back to 1842 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Situated right in front of Newberry Library, the park is surrounded by older mansions, condos, and townhomes and it’s a pleasant place to spend the afternoon people watching on a warm day.

There is a fountain in the middle and aside from the small sidewalk leading to the benches in the center; the trees and grassy lawn make it a sweet little oasis near Chicago’s busy north side of town. During the spring there are beautiful flowers and it’s a great spot to read a book and people watch. If you're a dog person, many people bring their pups here during the weekends and from 5-6 p.m. on weekdays.

The park was originally used as a place to discuss community issues and it quickly became a popular spot for soap-box speeches. Everyone from artists and writers to political radicals and hobos used the park to lecture, recite poetry, or just go off on a rant. Every July, the Bughouse Square Committee holds the annual Bughouse Square Debates free speech gathering in conjunction with the Newberry Library’s annual book sale.
