The city of Galena is located in Jo Daviess County in the state of Illinois, USA. Founded in 1826, this city also acts as the county seat. It is named after the mineral ‘galena’ (a lead ore mineral) found in abundance in this region.
The annual average temperature is around 17°C. It is best to avoid travel between the months of November and February, when the temperature is quite low.
This region has a rich history being occupied by Native Americans followed by the French. This region and its surroundings were handed to the USA in the nineteenth century. An important historical town, Galena was the home to noted people like Ulysses Grant (war general), Herman Melville (writer) and John Gear (politician).
