Mattoon can be described as a city located in county of Coles, Illinois, US. It’s, in fact, one of the principal cities with respect to Charleston-Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Mattoon had been site of ‘Mad Gasser’ attacks that had taken place in 1940s.
Previous settlers from southern region resided in ‘forested areas’ along headwaters of ‘Little Wabash River’ to southwest of present town. Mattoon’s history can be traced to local railroads. Conventionally, a stronghold of manufacturing, this city is being challenged by loss of numerous major plants in last 20 years. On 18th of December, 2007, Mattoon had been chosen as site of US Department of Energy’s FutureGen zero emission power plant.
Mattoon receives rainfall of around 38 inches every year. Snowfall of 17 inches occurs. July proves to be the hottest month; with temperature of around 87 degree F; whereas January to be the coolest; with temperature of around 19 degree F.
According to census conducted in the year 2000, population of Mattoon was 18291.
