The city has an area of 156 sq km. Springfield lies in a large subsection of the Lower Illinois River Basin, known as the Till Basin. Majority of the Lower Illinois River Basin is flat, including the Springfield area.

Springfield has an approximate population of 111,400. The state government is the largest employer of the city and also the county, making government jobs the mainstay of the city’s economy.
