Springfield is the capital city of Illinois, USA. It belongs to Sangamon County and has a mayor-council form of government.
The city has an area of 156 sq km. Springfield lies in a large subsection of the Lower Illinois River Basin, known as the Till Basin. Majority of the Lower Illinois River Basin is flat, including the Springfield area.
Having a typical mid-latitude climate, Springfield has hot summers and cold winters. The average annual temperature is about 17°C during which, July is the hottest with an average temperature of 30°C and January the coldest with an average temperature of 1°C.
Springfield has an approximate population of 111,400. The state government is the largest employer of the city and also the county, making government jobs the mainstay of the city’s economy.
