This village also serves as a retail hub for its surrounding areas, namely Buffalo Grove, Mundelein, Libertyville, Lake Forest and Lincolnshire. The village has a total area of 7.6 square miles of area of which 7.4 square miles is completely of land and the other 0.2 square miles are covered with water.

Out of 20,120 populations in 2000, there were 7,568 of households and 5,312 of families that were residing in the village. In the 1980s and 90s, the village grew geographically through the annexation of the surrounding areas.
