Tourist Guide Evansville
Evansville was settled by immigrants on the banks of River Ohio some 200 years ago, in 1812. It is the third largest city in Indiana with a population of approximately 121,500. This region is fairly flat with a few small hills and valleys.
Evansville has a continental climate with temperatures ranging from 0°C to 26°C. Due to its proximity to River Ohio, it was initially named La Belle Rivière, meaning ‘The Beautiful River’, by the French explorers. Later, it was named Evansville after Robert Morgan Evans who was one of its founders.
During the Second World War, Evansville was one of the largest producers of some of the important war equipments like Tank Landing Ships and Thunderbolts. At present, industries like manufacturing, retailing, distribution and health care form the backbone of the economy.
