Central Canal Bridge
The Indiana Central Bridge is situated in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, in the Indiana Central Canal. The state of Indiana once attempted to build numerous canals around the state, beginning with the Erie Canal but due to financial difficulties in 1839, that dream was never realized. The original plans for the Indiana Central Canal was to have it extend 296 miles (477 km) from Peru, Indiana to Evansville Indiana, where it would reach to the Ohio River, but only eight miles of the canal was completed.
The Central Canal Towpath runs from Broad Rippe to 30th Street near Riverside Park and goes by Butler University and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The canal has been designated by the American Water Works Association as an American Water Landmark. Those visiting the White River State Park can check out the bridge or stroll along the canal on a perfect Indianapolis day, if you happen to be in the area.
