The Old Indianapolis Zoo was opened in 1964 and renovated in 1988. It is located in White River State Park downtown. The major role of the Indianapolis Zoo is world wide conservation and research.
The zoo holds the fame of being the world’s first zoo conducting the successful artificial insemination of an African elephant. The Indianapolis Zoo contains more than 1,900 species of plant collections and many animal collections. The zoo holds the African Lion Awareness every year.
