The origin of Atlantic can be traced to October 1868; when Franklin H. Whitney, John P. Cook, BF Allen, Connie F. Beemer, and many others came forward to get it established. The origin of the name ‘Atlantic’ is still unknown. However, local legend states that the town attained this name by a toss. In other words, it stands half-way between Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and; Atlantic won.
As of census conducted in the year 2000, population of Atlantic was 7257; with its density being 343.8 per sq. Km. Per capita income with regards to the city was found to be $17832. Around 12.1% of total population was found to be below poverty line; inclusive of 17.5% of the ones under 18 years of age.
