Centerville city is the county seat of Appanoose County in Iowa. It was founded in 1846 by Jonathon Stratton as Chaldea. The name was later named as Centerville and was incorporated in 1855. At present, the city is supported by many small industrial plants, in the area of plastic products.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.6 square miles of which 4.5 square miles is land.
Early 1900s showed the population increase along with the popularity of coal increase. The population of the city was 5,924 in 2000. In 2009, it reached 5,513 people with a population percentage of -4.02 percent since 2000.
