Des Moines: Attractions and more...

Des Moines city displays exquisite architecture, most evident in the Iowa State Capitol building, which has a 23-karat gold leaf-plated main dome. Another site of architectural importance is the Terrace Hill, residence of the Governor of Iowa and the finest example of Second Empire Architecture in the country.

Visit the Des Moines Botanical Centre, which houses more than 1,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants. The Blank Park Zoo is home to 1,400 animals from 104 species and must be visited for its special attractions like the butterfly garden and the bat cave.

Make sure to visit the Downtown Farmers Market, held from May through October, every Saturday morning, famous for fresh fruits and vegetables, home-baked breads and pastries, hand-made clothing and jewellery and specialty cheeses and wines

Some of the popular festivals of the city include the Drake Relay’s Downtown Festival and the Des Moines Art Festival.
