The city was established in between 1808 to 1813 and was the permanent Us military fortification on the Upper part of Mississippi. It was on of the three posts of the military operations that was used by the US army to establish control over Louisiana Purchase territories. Fort Madison was basically built to trade and pacify Native Americans in the Upper part of Mississippi river region.
