The Johnson County Historical Society was founded as the Mormon Trek Memorial Foundation in 1967. The aim was to remember the Mormon Handcart Expeditions. The Foundation initially created a park and monument at the site of the Handcart Expedition Campground and then developed an idea of creating a local history museum. So, the name was changed to Johnson County Historical Society. The cultural and historical heritage of the Johnson County community is preserved here.
