Urbandale makes use of council-manager type of government. ‘City Council’ goes on to contain mayor; along with 5 council members. All these get elected for a term of 4 years.
As per US Census Bureau, Urbandale’s total area consists of 53.7 sq. Km; out of which 0.10%25 comprises of water.
Urbandale got incorporated in the form of a city on 16th of April, 1917. At that time, Urbandale went on to serve as one of the streetcar suburbs with regards to Des Moines; that too with 4 coal mines. Moreover, this place also performed the function as ‘end of Urbandale Line’ after plans of building a railroad to Woodward from Des Moines got abandoned due to ‘right-of-way’ issues. The year 1948 witnessed closing down of coal mines; whereas 1951 of streetcar service.
The population of Urbandale as per 2005 census was 35904.
