Liberal is located in Seward County, Kansas, United States of America. The first house in Liberal was built in 1872 by S.S. Rogers. The US Post Office which came to town in 1885 was named Liberal by Rogers. In 1888 a railroad was built near the town. In 1920, Gas field which is now called Panhandle-Hugoton Gas Field was found west of town. In 1951, Oil field was discovered in the southwest region of the town. The National Helium, world’s largest helium plant was inaugurated in 1963.
The city covers an area of about 11.2 square miles and the total population of the town in 2000 was 19,666. The main economic activities of the area are agriculture and energy. The main industries of Liberal include broom corn, winter wheat and cattle ranching. The National Beef Packing is the largest employer of the town.
The city of Liberal has mild climate. January is the coolest month when the temperature ranges from 19 to 46 degree F. The month of July is the hottest when the temperature is ranges from 65 - 94 degree F.
