Of the many attractions in Wichita, Kansas, the city might be most recognized for its reputation as the “Air Capital of the World.” The city of Wichita garnered attention from the flight community for many reasons, but mostly because the aircraft corporations Stearman, Cessna, Mooney and Beech were all founded in Wichita in the late 1920s and early 1920s. This varied aircraft industry, as well as Wichita’s status as a test center for new aviation, led to the city’s title as the Air Capital. During World War II, the city’s aircraft manufacturing exploded in the face of the war effort. To this day, the town remains a major airliner manufacturing nucleus both nationally and internationally. It is comparable to Detroit’s notoriety within the automobile industry. No other city boasts an equal concentration of top-of-the-line aircraft manufacturers located within such a close geographic boundary. Understand this history is a paramount aspect of understand the identity of Wichita, Kansas.
