The Keeper of the Plains
The sacred Native American grounds in Wichita, Kansas are commemorated by a towering sculpture called The Keeper of the Plains. Located at 728 1/2 West Douglas Avenue, the 44-foot tall steel sculpture watches over the point where the Big and Little Arkansas rivers meet. It stands as homage to the Native Americans who walked the Wichita grounds long before modern day Wichitans.
The monument features a stone circle base, in the center of which is a towering Indian Warrior Chief. The warrior statue watches over the city like a guard, hence its title of “keeper.” The stone circle at the bottom is dubbed the “Ring of Fire” because of the many fire pits, which are lit at night in fifteen-minute increments to make the statue glow from beneath.
Built in 1974 by famed Native American designed Blackbear Bosin, the sculpture has become the most recognized and beloved icon within the city of Wichita. At trip to Wichita would not be complete without a visit to the monument that is such an important part of the city’s identity.
