Wichita Monuments and Historic Buildings: U.S. Courthouse

U.S. Courthouse

An immense building of impressive classical architecture towers over downtown Wichita, Kansas as its trusted U.S. Courthouse branch. Located at 401 North Market Street, the courthouse may have a notably modern exterior, but it houses centuries of American tradition and history. Despite its primary use as a courthouse, the building is recognized for its Depression-era murals, precise Art Deco, and classical interior architecture that contrasts that façade of the building. Some notable pieces of artwork within the building include the lobby murals, “Pioneers in Kansas,” by J. Ward Lockwood, and “Kansas Farming,” by Richard Haines. The design elements of the building are almost as influential as the work performed within.

The original U.S. Courthouse was a combination Court House and Post Office, which together were influential in the development of the city. In 1968, the post office was relocated, and the new U.S. Courthouse building has since been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. And ‘historic’ is exactly what the Wichita U.S. Courthouse is, and well worth a visit on your trip through the city.
