The Great Plains Transportation Museum provides a glimpse into the history of the Kansas transportation system. Located in Wichita, Kansas at 700 East Douglas, The Great Plains Transportation Museum is like a childhood train set come to life. The museum focuses primarily on railroads, honoring the method of transporting that allowed the city of Wichita to grow and flourish throughout history. The museum features six locomotives including an electric train, a drover’s car, a tank car and various types of cabooses. There are also several pieces of rolling stock used of freight and passenger trains.
The museum’s two largest exhibits are the Santa Fe Steam Locomotive #3768 and Santa Fe FP45 Diesel #93. These trains are unique because represent the last class of passenger locomotives that were built in their respective eras. The exhibits continue inside the museum with railroad prints, signs, lanterns, tools and other historical transportations artifacts.
