Located on the western coast of the Kenai Peninsula near the outlet of the Kenai River, Kenai lies on the western boundary of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge on the Kenai Spur Highway in Alaska, USA. It is spread over an area of 92 sq km.
It has a population of around 7,000. Established by Russian fur traders in 1791, the town grew when Alaska’s first oil discovery was made at Swanson River in 1957. It has ever since been a centre of oil exploration.
Temperatures in summer vary from 7°C to 18°C .Winter temperatures vary from –15°C to –5°C. Kenai receives abundant rain.
The Kenai River is a major sport fishing location for the residents and tourists. Kenai offers a breathtaking view of the active volcanoes across the inlet and the majestic Alaska Range and also gives an insight into Russian history.
