Ben Hawes State Park
The park is named after a former mayor of Owensboro. It is spread over an area of 297 acres. It’s features includes an one mile hiking trail, a baseball field, playground equipment, a 27 hole golf course, and a basket ball court.
International Bluegrass Music Museum
The museum has exhibits which are inter-active, with, live instrument demonstrations, costumes and posters of the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor. The museum is spread in area of 21,000 square feet and has 2 floors.
This being a non-profit organization, it has raised funds with the help of famous bluegrass musicians such as Ricky Skaggs and Ralph Stanley.
Western Kentucky Botanical Garden
The garden is spread over 9 acres of land. It is open to visitors all the year round from dusk to dawn. The entrance is just west of downtown on 2nd Street at Carter Road. It opened in the year 1993, as a cornfield, this was the innovation of the horticulturalist Mike Klahr.
In present date it has six gardens in all, iris garden, butterfly garden, daylily garden, fruit and berry garden, rose garden and an herb garden. Plants include blackberry, apple, pear trees, apricot, hemlocks, cherry, peach, boxwood, raspberry, germander, santolina, peonies, barberry, lavender and yews.
