Paducah previously known as Pekin is situated at the convergence of the Ohio and Tennessee River in McCracken County in Kentucky. It is the largest city in the Jackson Purchase Region of Kentucky with a population of 26,307 (according to census 2000) consisting of a mixed community of Native Americans.
The city covers a total land area of 19.5 sq miles and is at an elevation of 341 feet. Similar to the other cities in Kentucky, Paducah has a humid subtropical climate with the highest temperature of 41ºC in the month of July and the lowest of -26ºC in the month of January.
The city has had snowstorms in 1978 and 2004. The city was included as a town originally but with its port facilities, later expanded rapidly and became the headquarters for many barge line companies.
