Located on the western coast of Revillagigedo Island, near the southernmost boundary of Alaska, USA, Ketchikan is named after Ketchikan Creek that flows through the city. It covers an area of 10.7 sq km.
Most of the town sits over water, supported by piles. It is centred on one road, Tongass Avenue, which runs along the shores of Tongass Narrows. It is lined with forested hills and is surrounded by a waterway. The Deer Mountain in the south offers a panoramic view of downtown Ketchikan and the surrounding terrain.
It lies in the maritime climate zone. It enjoys warm winters, cool summers and heavy precipitation. Summer temperatures range from 10°C to 18°C, while winter temperatures vary from –2°C to 3°C.
It is populated by a little over 8,000 inhabitants. It boasts of a diverse economy supported by fish processing facilities and tourism.
