Situated in Monroe County in Florida, USA, the city of Key West Keys lies on the south-western end of the Florida Keys. It is known as the ‘Southernmost city in Continental United States’ and covers an area of 19.2 sq km.
Owing to its proximity to the Gulf Stream, Key West has a mild, tropical–maritime climate. It does not experience frost or snow even during winter. With an average annual high of 27°C and an average annual low of 20°C, the climate is warm throughout the year.
The area was originally inhabited by the Calusa tribe. It then came under Spanish control and later under British rule. In 1821, the island of Key West was purchased by John Simonton and a US naval base was established in the city.
The city has a population of around 27,000. Home to North America’s only living coral reef, it boasts of a diverse flora and fauna.
