Separated from mainland Alaska in USA by the Shelikof Strait, the Kodiak Island is bordered in the south by the Pacific Ocean. It is the second largest island in the United States covering an area of 9,293 sq km.
The mountainous north and east end of the island is heavily forested while the south is grassy. Discovered by a Russian fur trader in 1763, the island became the first Russian colony in America.
The island has a strong marine climate with little or no freezing weather, occasional high winds and frequent cloud cover and fog. Summer temperatures range from 3°C to 24°C while winter temperatures range from –10°C to 7°C.
The population of the island is around 7,000 and fishing is their main occupation. Primarily a non-native community, a majority of the Native population is Alutiiq.
The island, situated in wilderness and steeped in Russian history, is the ultimate stop for Alaska lovers.
