Set in the heart of the Cajun Country, the city of Abbeville is the parish seat of Vermilion Parish in Louisiana. The land was founded and named by Father Antoine Desire Megret, a Catholic priest in 1850.
The charming city with a population of less than 12000 has a downtown centered on the Magdalen Square which is surrounded by historic buildings like the Saint Mary Magdalene Church, the Vermilion Parish Courth and restaurants specializing in delectable Cajun and traditional food.
Abbeville celebrates a host of festivals like the Annual Les Lumieres du Village festivals held every year on Christmas where the white lights illuminate the historic buildings and the oak trees around Abbeville. Other unique events include the Giant Omelette Celebration where a 5000 egg Giant Omelette is made on a 12 foot skillet and competitions like the egg cracking and fastest Omelet maker are held.
