Covington, originally known as Wharton, is situated at the junction of the Tchefuncte River and the Bogue Falaya in St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. The city covers a total area of 6.9 sq miles and has a population of 8,483 inhabitants as per the 2000 census.
Covington has a subtropical climate with lengthy springs and autumn. Although it is sunny most of the year, rainstorms and hurricanes may occur as a result of it being in close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.
It has an average rainfall of 65 inches annually. The city is well known for its clean air and water. The city has numerous festivals and cultural events which take place annually. Visitors can enjoy the live performances of local and well known musicians and artists at such events. Fall for Art 2008 was one such event held recently.
