Tourists can see parts of New Orleans' past by touring the Spanish Fort district, a historic neighborhood in the city also known as Fort St. Jean.
The fort in this area was built in colonial times by the French, in order to protect one of the entrances to Bayou St. John. Throughout the city's history, this area has been used for defense by the Spanish, the French again, and lastly the United States, depending on who was in control of the city at the time.
Private developers later turned the fort into an amusement park which was subsequently abandoned. Today, visitors can still see the ruins of the original Spanish Fort, and visit the surrounding area for a leisure stroll and picnic, as the historic ruins are located on the only bayou within the boundaries of the city of New Orleans.
This is a good, tranquil neighborhood of the city to pass the hours and immerse yourself in the past of a place that has had such different cultural and ethnic influences.
