The third oldest city in Louisiana, Opelousas is the parish seat of St. Landry Parish. It lies at the junction of Interstate 49 and US Route 190. It is also the principal city for the Opelousas-Eunice Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is the third largest city in the Lafayette-Acadiana Combined Statistical Area.
Founded in 1720, Opelousas is known as the spice capital of the world. This city takes its name from the Native American tribe Appalousa, who had occupied this area prior the Europeans.
As per the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.1 square miles of which 0.14 percent is water and 7.1 square miles is land.
The population of the city in 2000 was 22,860 people. In 2008, the population record estimated 92,178 people.
