Fort Knox, in Maine was built in the middle of the 19th century with the intent to defend the Penobscot River and Bangor,a major source of lumber.
The Fort was built of granite (instead of wood)and it is named after Henry Knox, the US Secretary of War during the civil war.
The fort was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970 and now is named Fort Knox State Park.
