Orono town is situated in Penobscot County and was at first settled in 1774. It was named in honor of Chief Joseph Orono of the Penobscot Nation. The Orono town is also home to the University of Maine. The town was incorporated in 1806.
The population as per the 2000 census was 9,114 people. As per the 2009 census estimates, the population of the town is 8,311 people. And so, since 2000, it has had a growth in population of -0.22 percent.
