When the First Parish Congregational Church was founded in 1730, it was the ninth church in Maine. In the 19th century, there was a second largest church building which was constructed in 1818. By 1860s, the need was felt to have a large modern church. The present church building was dedicated in 1868, and was designed by a noted architect of Portland, George N Harding who put efforts in the Italianate style.
