Assateague Island is a 37 mile long barrier island which is situated off the eastern coast of Virginia and Maryland. This island is best known for its herds of wild horses, the Assateague Lighthouse and also for pristine beaches. This beautiful island is a priceless seashore ecosystem for the visitors.
To reach this island, one can cross the bridge access with car from Virginia and Maryland. There is no road which runs the length of the island. Mostly, this island can be easily accessed by East Coast residents.
This island is managed by three official park agencies. In 1962, the Assateague Island National Seashore was established to protect Assateague Island. The National Park service along with the Fish & Wildlife Service helps protect this island’s splendor.
There is however no resident population here. The land area is 63.21 square kilometers and is mainly a vacation destination.
