The Fort McHenry National Monument is a star shaped fort located at the entrance of the city’s Harbour and is well known for its role in the British attack during the War of 1812. This event was the inspiration for Francis Scott Key’s poem “The Star-Spangled Banner”. The Fort was used as a prison for detention of Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War (1861-65) and subsequently served as a military post until it was abandoned in 1900 and named as a National Park in 1925. It was then designated as a national monument and historic shrine in 1936.
