Towson was made the county seat of Baltimore in 1854. Towson is located at (39.392980, -76.609562). The city covers a total area of about 14.2 square miles and 1.06 % of the total area is covered by water. The area is positioned north of Baltimore City and inside the I-695 (Beltway). It is also east of I-83 and down York Road. The census boundaries of the city include Hampton and Lutherville-Timonium on the north, Pikesville on the west, Baltimore on the south and Parkville on the east.
