The acronym MIT speaks in thunderous words the reputation of the institution it represents, enough to strike fear into the hearts of many competitors and envy to many more.  The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is undoubtedly an excellent university. What few people know though is that it has a secret weapon in the academic war of public perception. The MIT museum is at once an outreach project for the institution and a top class museum in its own right, with collections that in some areas rival those in the worlds’ major museums.

The stated mission of the MIT museum is to use innovative presentation and multimedia techniques alongside the conventional depth of its material to lift the edge of the veil so that those of thus who aren’t initiated can get a glimpse of the fascinating work that goes on behind the scenes at MIT: “to share the creative energy of MIT, and to stimulate an understanding and appreciation of the meanings of scientific and technological innovation in the modern world.”

My particular favourite among the permanent collections is Hart’s Nautical, a vast and deep collection of nautical technology. Also very interesting and perhaps more up to date is are the rooms on Holography.
