Nantucket is an island which lies in the southern part of Cape Cod in Massachusetts in the US. The meaning of the word is said to be ‘far away island’ or ‘in the midst of waters’.
The island is also named as ‘The Grey Lady’ because of the severe fog which occurs in the region. Nantucket County covers a total area of 303.5 sq miles but 84%25 of it is made up of water. The land area is 47.8 sq miles.
Folger Hill is the highest point on the island and is 109 feet above sea level. The town and county of Nantucket consist of the Nantucket Island as well as the adjoining islands of Muskeget and Tuckernuck.
As per the 2007 census the population of the place is 10,531 people.
The island has a cold climate with 29 inches of snowfall and 202 sunny days per year. July is pleasant and January is the coldest month. The island gets 41 inches of rainfall annually and it rains the most in the month of December.
