The population of the city was 27,899 as per the 2000 census. This city is also known as “West Side” because it is on the western side of the Connecticut River from Springfield. This is a fact which plays a major part in the early history of the town.
The initial settlement was Springfield, and the population was more than Springfield for many decades. But in 1774, this town was incorporated as a separate town having territory which includes Agawam and most parts of Holyoke.
