The University was founded in 1863. The main intention of the university was to provide instruction to students interested in Agriculture, Mechanical and Military arts.The short form of the university is UMASS. It offers over 90 undergraduate and 65 graduate areas of study. It was know as the University of Massachusetts from 1947 until the creation of the UMass system, for which it now serves as the flagship campus.
