The residents of the state are usually called ‘Michiganians’ or ‘Michiganders’. People who stay in the touristy upper Peninsula are often called ‘Yoopers’, and in stark contrast, the residents of the lower Peninsula are referred to as ‘Trolls’. The people of Michigan are known for their friendliness and hospitality.

The main attraction of the land is the Mackinac Straits on which lies the historic Fort Michilimackinac, built in the late eighteenth century. The Detroit Institute of Arts has a significant art collection with over 100 galleries, while the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village will take you back on an American journey through time. Also of interest is the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore known for its colourful rock formations and waterfalls.

The Traverse City Film Festival takes place in late July and showcases the best in world cinema. Among others like the Michigan State Fair in August and the Detroit International Jazz Festival that runs during Labour Day weekend, a particularly interesting event is the African World Festival held in the third week of August in downtown Detroit. This festival features a plethora of African cultural programs and attracts quite a lot of visitors.
