The main business district area, Downtown Niles comprises of small shops and services. The city ranks ranks 110th on the Forbes list of Best Small Places for Business. This ranking is incidentally the highest among the Michigan cities. There is only one rail line in the city and that is the Amtrak's Blue Water Service. The Apple festivel, Bluegrass festivel, Dragon Boat challenge, Hunter ice festivel, etc. are some of the main events in the calendar. One of the main visitor sites is Fort St.Joseph Musuem. Niles is a city that has been under four counties: France, Britain, Spain and the USA. The Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve lying over 105 acres is a botanical garden, and nature preserve. One of the specialties is the Japanese "dry" garden. A different exhibit about the ecosystems is another specialty. Further environmental education courses are offered year round to attract tourists.
