Apple Valley city is in northwest of Dakota County in Minnesota. Prior to its incorporation in 1969, it was known as Lebanon Township.

As of 2000 census, the population of Apple Valley was 45,527 people. This made the city the fifteenth most populous city in Minnesota. As of 2009, the population of the city reached to 50,074. Since 2000, it has had a population growth of 10.06 percent.

As per the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.7 square miles, of which, 17.3 square miles is land and 0.4 square miles is water. Its elevation from the lowest to the highest points can vary by a hundred feet or more.
