Bemidji is an American city. It is the administrative head quarters of Beltrami County in Minnesota. Bemidji is located southwest of Lake Bemidji, the most northern lake that serves as a source of Mississippi. The town name comes from the word Ojibwe "Bay-may-ji-ga-Maug. Bemidji is situated approximately 300 kilometres northwest of the Twin Cities on the southwest coast of Lake Bemidji. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city covers an area of 33.5 square kilometres, of which 30.5 square kilometres is covered by land and 3.1 square miles of water. According to the census in 2000, people living in Bemidji are 11,917 divided as households 4,669 and 2,427 families. The population over 84 percent are White, eleven percent Americans and smaller minorities all together. On the whole, in the city, the relative population of 21.2%25 of residents come under the age category of 18, and 24.9%25 are in between 24 to 18 years, 23.0%25 are between 44 to 25 years, 15.4%25 will be under 64 to 45 years and 15.6%25 are over the age of 65. Bemidji has an airport, namely Bemidji-Beltrami County Airport.
