Bloomington is known as the fifth largest city in Minnesota in Hennepin County. It is the third core city of Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington. It lies at the heart of the south metro area. The early settlers named this city Bloomington, after Bloomington, Illinois.

As per the 2000 census, its population was 85,172 people and by 2006, it reached to 80,869 people. By 2009, the population estimated to around 81,446 people.

As per the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 38.4 square miles, out of which, 35.5 square miles is land and the remaining 2.9 square miles is water.
