Northfield city is in Dakota and Rice counties in Minnesota. Most part of the city lies in Rice County, and a small part of the city extends into Dakota County. Founded in 1855 by John W North, the city was an agricultural center earlier with lots of corn and wheat farms.
As per the 2000 census, the population was 17,147 people. By 2009, the population reached to 19,331 people.
As per the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.2 square kilometers, with 18.1 square kilometers land and 0.1 square kilometers of water.
Northfield experiences 31.3 inches of rainfall and 41.2 inches of snowfall each year. The number of measurable precipitation is 102 days with 196 sunny days each year. The month of July is high with 83.4 Fahrenheit and the month of January is the coldest month with 2.6 Fahrenheit.
The city also owns almost 35 parks which are over 400 acres of land. Three of these parks have picnic shelters.
