Pipestone National Monument offers an amazing opportunity for visitors to explore American Indian culture and the natural resources of the tall grass prairie. The historic building was established in 1937 by the Congress to protect the historic pipestone quarries, a site known by many American Indians as sacred site. Traditionally, pipestone was used to make ceremonial pipes, vital to traditional Plains Indian religious practices. During the summer months, there are cultural demonstrations at the monument.
