Dedicated to preserve the history of the state of Minnesota, Minnesota Historical Society is a private, non-profit educational and cultural institution. In 1849 it was founded by the territorial legislature. 29 museums and historic sites are owned and operated by the society. Nearly 165,000 historical artifacts, 800,000 archaeological items, 5,500 paintings, 38,000 cubic feet of manuscripts, and many more collections are stored by the society in the $76.4 million History Center located in Saint Paul.
