The two largest attractions in the region are the Canterbury Park horse racetrack and the Valleyfair amusement park. The Valleyfair amusement park is a theme cum Leisure Park which has an IMAX theater in its complex along with 4 water rides, 5 roller coasters and a Ferris wheel. Historic Murphy’s Landing is an open air museum reconstructed in the style of a village and depicts the life of the people in Minnesota from 1840-1890. During this period several historic events took place here such as the displacement of the Native Americans, the Civil War, the 1862 Dakota War, the European settlement and the Minnesota statehood in 1858.
The Minnesota Renaissance Festival is a popular event held in Shakopee, which brings back the memories of the 16th century life here through its varied costumes, a mock up village, programs, music, craft shops, authentic food stalls, pony and elephant rides, jugglers and artisans keeping the crowd entertained.
