Tourist Guide Amory

A planned city, Amory is located at 33°59′3′N 88°29′17′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.0 square miles (20.7 km²), of which, 7.5 square miles (19.4 km²) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²) of it (6.37%) is water.  Amory was the first planned city in Mississippi. The Kansas City, Memphis & Birmingham Railroad needed a mid-point between Memphis, Tennessee and Birmingham, Alabama for their locomotives, and they laid out the new town of Amory in 1887. People from nearby Cotton Gin Port on the Tombigbee River abandoned their town and moved to Amory.

Since the opening of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway in 1985, it has become a port itself. Timber and dairy products, in addition to cotton, are produced in the area. The Gilmore Memorial Hospital is well regarded as having one of the best maternal wards in northeast Mississippi. Residents of other cities drive the extra mile to take advantage of its maternity facilities. Other business sectors include sports equipment manufacturing, wood pulp processing and furniture and textile industries.
