The state was a frontrunner in the American Civil Rights Movement. A majority of the population are African Americans, especially in the north-western, central and south-western regions. Mississippi has produced imminent celebrities like Elvis Presley and Oprah Winfrey. Bands like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles have also been influenced by the famed Mississippi Blues.
Mississippi has many historic landmarks such as the Federal-style Rosalie Mansion, the Old Mississippi State Capitol and the Okolona Historic District. The Winterville Mounds used to be a ceremonial site for prehistoric natives and is a popular tourist attraction. Other places of interest include the Vicksburg National Military Park, Longwood, Tupelo and the Clarksdale Railroad Depot (built in 1918 and considered as one of the South’s most important museums).
The capital city plays host to events like the USA International Ballet Competition, the Crossroads Film Festival and the Taste of Mississippi. At Tupelo, the Tupelo Blue Suede Cruise takes place in May and attracts classic car lovers from around the world. Experience tribal culture at the Chocktaw Indian Fair in July, or celebrate musical heritage at the Annual Elvis Presley Festival during summer months.
